Project Overview
 

Multi-sector relief programmes incorporating provision of Primary Health Care, Water and Sanitation, Psycho-social, Hygiene Education and Distribution of relief goods for the vulnerable populations of Northern Uganda. Support of the Medical and other programmes in Congo.

Main Responsibilities
 

To manage all field based aspects of the logistics function relating to Medair’s programme in line with agreed and accepted Medair logistics practices and procedures. To be based in Kampala (KLA), with travel to Uganda and DR Congo project locations.

Key Activity Areas
 

Logistics Management


·         Oversee and coach the management of the assets, the warehousing, the transport, the distribution for all field locations.


·         Create and maintain links with suppliers and transporters.


·         Manage and track local and international orders and liaise with Medair HQ Logistics Coordinator.


·         Assist Country Logisticians in customs clearing for transit / import goods.


·         Provide technical support to the team in all project sites including evaluation.


Logistics Development and Strategy


·         Play active part of Uganda management team and partake in quarterly Planning Meetings.


·         Promote and maintain Medair quality manual and procedures, including Kampala Logistics manual.


HR Management & Development


·         Daily management of the Logistics Kampala team.


·         Ensure logistics training for the programmes (together with Office Manager KLA).


·         Coaching and training input to the Logistics Manager for DR Congo (ex-field Logistician to be coached in Logs admin and procurement).


Administration / Finance / IT


·         Oversee Filing and Shipping of Logistics Packs for donor accountability.


·         Budget management of logistics expenditures and Kampala base budget.

 
Qualifications
 

·         Management or related field degree or


·         Other high qualification in Management

Experience
 

·         Experience in a coordination role


·         Project management skills and experience


·         Experience in training / mentoring staff desirable

Specific Skills and Attributes
 

·         Strong leadership skills and a supportive management style


·         Advanced planning, assessment and analytical skills desirable


·         Knowledge of budget monitoring and good with figures desirable


·         Ability to provide staff development at all opportunities


·         Able to sets clear objectives


·         Proactive, dynamic and creative problem solver


·         Capacity to work under pressure and to tight deadlines



Medair standard working requirements for the field


·         Minimum 12 months professional experience in a relevant field


·         Minimum 3 months overseas work experience


·         Minimum time commitment of 1 year


·         Committed Christians and strong adherence to Medair values


·         Strong English communication skills (oral and written)


·         Familiar with Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook


·         Able to live and work with a multicultural team under difficult conditions


·         Strong character traits, including emotional stability, adaptability, ability to handle stress, cultural and gender sensitivity, honesty


·         Single or married - without children, no dependent children


·         Successful completion of Medair Relief/Rehabilitation Orientation Course (ROC)

Special Working Conditions
 

·         Working and living in Muyenga, Kampala, situated in a quiet, safe suburb of the city itself, 15 minutes drive from the centre of town. Living in the Medair house.


·         Security is good, but NGO’s can be subject to robbery on the roads. It is possible to go out at night.
